There has been a big increase in the theft of catalytic converters in cars in the last couple years, the reason is because metals of the platinum group metals (ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium, and platinum) are the most expensive metals in the world. These metals have the unique ability to convert harmful emissions of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons to less harmful substances. Even though there isn’t that much of the platinum group metals in catalytic converters, a few grams is worth hundreds of dollars.
