Our species is called Homo sapiens. And, because we gave ourselves our own scientific name, it means “wise man” in Latin. Homo technically means a male man and sapiens means wise. After all, it was nearly all men that were doing early science and naming everything. Human fossils have been found and studied for about 200 years so far, but in the past 50 years so much has been discovered about our species and our place in the world. Still, it’s joked about in paleoanthropology that all human fossils ever found could easily fit into the back of a pick up truck. Ahh…there’s so many bones and new extinct human species to find!
